Apple’s iPhone 18, expected to launch in 2026, is said to become the first smartphone in the world to feature a groundbreaking 2-nanometer chip, according to reports. In partnership with TSMC (Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company), Apple will bring the A20 chip to life using this next-generation fabrication process, which promises faster speed and better energy efficiency.
The iPhone 18 will also introduce a significant upgrade in packaging technology, shifting from Apple’s traditional InFo (Integrated Fan-Out) packaging to the more advanced WMCM (Wafer-Level Multi-Chip Module) packaging. This new method enables better integration of multiple components, such as the CPU, GPU, DRAM, and AI/ML accelerators, within a single package, leading to improved performance and faster communication between these elements.
Along with the 2nm chip, the iPhone 18 is tipped to come with 12GB of RAM, marking a substantial increase from the current iPhone 16 models, which offer 8GB. This memory upgrade is tipped to improve the device’s multitasking capabilities and overall user experience.
While all iPhone 18 models will see the memory boost, the new 2nm chip may be reserved for the higher-end “Pro” models due to cost considerations, Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo reported. The iPhone 16 Pro models already offer a powerful performance to users as they are using a 3nm chip. With the 2nm chip, Apple is expected to make the experience even smoother and impactful.
As for other features of the iPhone 18 series, there are no details right now. Also, it is too early for us to see the leaks of the 2026 iPhones because the iPhone 16 was recently launched in India and we are two years away from the launch of the iPhone 18.
The next-generation iPhone 17 series will likely use the A19 chipset, which will also be based on the 3nm process. Next year, Apple is said to make a big change to its iPhone series. The leaks claim the company would announce a new iPhone 17 Air model in 2025 and discontinue the Plus series. It is also being reported that the Air model will be more expensive than the iPhone 17 Pro Max model. But, nothing is confirmed, so people are advised to take the details with a pinch of salt.
